We are grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from the community. To continue our efforts in helping those affected by the Maui wildfires, we are working on making another batch of the design.
*More information about the second release of t-shirts will be announced on our Instagram soon.
UPDATE 8/16 We are still in disbelief over the unimaginable destruction caused by the wildfires on the island of Maui. Nothing could have prepared us for the devastating effects it has had on the island and community.
Although we cannot recover what has been lost, it is important for us to come together to support those affected as best as we can.

In summer 2021, Local Motion Hawaii partnered with surfboard shaper Pat Rawson to create a limited collection of Local Motion's iconic surfboards from the 70's, 80's, and more.
|
It is undeniable that surfboard shaper Pat Rawson has made a name for himself in the surf industry; making thousands of boards since the start of his shaping career in 1968. With the desire to be based at the core of surfing in Hawaii, he built his shaping room on the North Shore of Oahu.
As interest in his work grew, Local Motion Founder (Rob Burns) recruited Rawson to join the Ohana in 1977, becoming Local Motion's second surfboard shaper.
Paying homage to Local Motion's history, the launch of the RAWSON for LOCAL MOTION partnership will feature the Kailua-Single and the '77-Single-Fin.

Starting in April, Hawai’i and wahine owned, Lani & Kai sunscreen will be available at Local Motion! In January of this year, Hawai’i became the first state in the US to ban key reef and human toxic chemical sunscreen ingredients, oxybenzone and octinoxate from shelves. How much should you care? A single drop of chemical sunscreen in 6.5 olympics sized swimming pools is enough to change the DNA structure of coral and kill it. When you think about the over 160 million sunscreen bottles sold annually in the US, most of which being chemical, we have a lot of ground to cover!
Chemical sunscreens are laden with hormone altering chemicals in coral AND humans
Chemical sunscreens work by penetrating into top layers of skin and turning the sun’s harmful rays into heat. This would be fine, except the CDC actually found key sunscreen chemical oxybenzone in 97% of American’s bloodstreams. These sunscreens contain some of the most disruptive toxins pumping excess hormones into the body, causing allergic reactions, and hot flashes. While canning oxybenzone and octinoxate is a good start, they’re just the tip of the iceberg.
To truly make a difference you need to flip your bottles and read your ingredients. Homosalate is a known endocrine disruptor, and avobenzone and octisalate are proven skin allergens.
Mineral sunscreens are physical barriers sitting on top of skin to block harmful rays
Mineral sunscreens are made without hormone and reef disturbing chemicals. Non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on the top of skin to block sun rays, that means no entering the bloodstream, no skin disruptions, no hormones, ever. While they may take a few more seconds to rub in, protection starts immediately - no 15 minute wait times like chemical ‘screen
Forming a reef-safe sunscreen line made for the islands
Lani & Kai’s sustainable sunscreen line has been a year in the making. After developing a zinc-based, clean mineral formula, the eco-friendly brand borrowed from baby foods and created an eco, resealable soft pack eliminating 60% of non-recyclable plastics from traditional sunscreen bottles. Lani & Kai is travel sized, safe for Hawai’i’s reefs, and has a silky matte texture to die for. Pocket and sports bra sized, their portable packs are perfect for a full day of morning mauka hikes to sunset sessions. Save our reefs, mālama i ke kai.

2017 has been a mixed road for team rider Keanu Asing. Riding high off his big victory at 2016's Quiksilver Pro and leading into the finals for the WSL CT (Championship Tour) at the end of the year, he found himself falling just barely short on the top 34 rank, meaning he would have to work harder the following year to re-qualify get back on the CT tour.
But despite his shortcoming, 2017 gave him an opportunity to rediscover his underdog roots. In the WSL QS (Qualifying Series) tour, he made 3rd place in the Pull&Bear Pantin Classic Galicia Pro and later claimed 1st place in both the Vans Pro and Barbados Surf Pro! It also gave him the opportunity to get to spend more time with his fiance, UFC professional mixed martial artist Kailin Curran. The pair finally tied the knot and got married in August that year, something they had been planning for a while.
And his hard work and patience paid off - at the conclusion of the 2017 QS tour at Vans World Cup at Sunset Beach, Oahu, Keanu made it at #9 on the QS ranking, meaning he re-qualified for the 2018 CT tour! It was a great win for the Hawaiian surfer, and an even greater win for the Hawaiian surf community to see a Hawaiian surfer (including Ezekiel Lau, who also qualified) compete with the big pros and represent Hawaii.
2018 is looking to be an exciting year, and we're sure that Keanu is now more hardened and determined as ever. We're looking forward to see what he brings to the table this time, and we're proud of him every step of the way.
To follow Keanu on tour, check out his WSL profile. Or follow him on Instagram.

Kenau Asing was in Cali at the right moment to link up with our friend, film-maker Brian Marrocco during Keanu's visit in Cali. At Huntington Beach Brian was able to capture Keanu in his element - here's what he had to say:
Linking up with Keanu was a great experience, he is such a passionate surfer and a really nice guy. While filming him I noticed how hard he works and how committed he is. Keanu is a very humble person and I was inspired by that. I love his surfing style and you can always tell he loves being in the water.

]]>As defined by HVN, their HVN Project initiative is... "At it’s roots the #hvnproject is a platform to inspire small acts of environmental sustainability, which lead to positive environmental changes on a large scale."
With buckets, gloves, and sifters in hand, we scaled the beach from shore to shore hunting for garbage and clusters of micro-plastics scattered throughout the beach.
It was also mind-blowing the amount of small plastic you can find in the sand. One handful alone can yield a small pile of waste. We came across tires and bottles, to even more trivial thing like underwear and PVC pipes.
After a while of shoveling and sifting, we called it a day. It was easy to say that we felt alittle better knowing that we left the zone better than it originally was.

]]>It's Pow Wow Week in Hawaii where many local and renowned artists amass in Kakaako to (literally) "paint the town." We had the privilege to have RVCA's Artist Network Program (ANP) artist Defer swing by our Ala Moana store (who happened to be here because of Pow Wow) and repaint a mural in our board room. With his eye for urban graffiti and a skillful hand with a brush, he made our wall look like one of the many colorful works of art you can now find in Kakaako. Stop by Ala Moana and check out his complete mural and the rest of his work!
Mahalo Defer, and to Roy Kimura from Kinetic Productions, RVCA, and Pow! Wow! Hawaii!
]]>A huge eager crowd awaited the man himself in an orderly line outside the store - and when he did appear everyone went wild! As a gift, we got Steve a custom Local Motion straw hat, a maile lei, and customized cupcakes!
Ecstatic fans were able to shake, snap and snap a pic with Steve. Even dropped in convo or two. It was easy to see that he really cared about his fans.
RVCA artist Defer, who happened to be working on the store mural, also had an epic meeting with Steve and exchanged a few comments about Defer's sick work.
Mahalo Steve, Dim Mak and all who attended/participated!
