23 May, 2015 – Honolulu – The first day of the Local Motion Surf Into Summer amateur event presented by VISSLA got underway this morning in clean 3 to 4 foot conditions with offshore winds at Ala Moana Bowls. Honoring over 30 years of tradition, Local Motion stays true to their roots by hosting nearly 200 of the state’s best amateur surfers in divisions along with the pro division, which kicked off yesterday and will resume Sunday to crown a champion.
16-year-old Noa Mizuno competed against a stacked 6-man format heat in the Jr. Mens Shortboard 15-17 division, showing power and agility with each ride. Advancing into the next round, Mizuno is also joined by Kamehameha student and North Shore surfer Kuio Young and wild card Christopher Bluthardt, who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in heat 2 of Round 1.
Standouts in the girls division included Kailua surfer Brisa Hennessy, Sunset local Zoe McDougall and Honolulu sisters Emily and Julie Nishimoto. All four advanced, and will return on Monday the 24th to compete for a title.
By midday, the Vissla Creators and Innovators division hit the water, where craftsmen like Glenn Pang, Matt Kinoshita, Makani McDonald and Brice Yamashita were eager to surf Bowls with only six guys out. A specialty event within the Local Motion Surf Into Summer Presented by VISSLA event, the invite-only division featured 18 of Hawaii’s premier board builders who competed for the title of Best Surfer/Shaper. Congratulations to Gen Asano of Honolulu, 20-year-old Tokoro protégé and talented shaper, for winning the division and the title in a hard-fought final. 2015 marks the second year of the Vissla Creators and Innovators division.
Day 3 of competition will see the WSL QS1,000 event back in the lineup, with a champion being crowned. The Local Motion Surf Into Summer amateur divisions will resume on Memorial Day, Monday the 25th, with top athletes joining the winner’s circle at the iconic south shore wave.
